Understanding Your Teeth
A simple reference guide to help you and your caregiver understand dental terminology used during your Waypoint Mobile Dentistry visits.
How Are Teeth Numbered?
The standard tooth numbering system runs from 1 to 32. Tooth number 1 is the farthest back on the upper right side of your mouth. Numbering continues along the upper teeth toward the front, ending at number 16 on the upper left side. It then drops to the lower jaw — number 17 is the farthest back on the lower left side, continuing to number 32 on the lower right.

Canines / Cuspids
The pointed teeth on either side of the incisors are used for tearing food.
Premolars / Bicuspids
Located between the canines and molars, used for crushing and grinding.
Molars
The large, flat teeth at the back of the mouth are used to grind food before swallowing.
Wisdom Teeth (3rd Molars)
The last four teeth to emerge are located at the very back. Not everyone develops them.
